+ The Reasons I Have a Planner!
I am passionate about the fact that living an organized life is one of the biggest keys to being successful!
By far my favorite accessory to accomplish that task every day is my planner.
However if you don’t currently have a planner, you might not know the importance of keeping a planner, and I’m here to tell you why exactly you need one.
My planner is my command center. I take it with me everywhere and it’s something I turn to multiple times a day. Not only do I keep my day to day tasks in there, I also use it to mark future events and collect my shopping list. Even when my life is chaotic, I still feel a sense of control when I have my planner.
Here are my reasons why I think everyone (including YOU!) should have a planner:
Reason 1: Stay Organized, duh!
Okay so maybe this is the most obvious reason why you should have a planner… But it’s true! When you have one place where all of your appointments, calendar, and to do lists are in one place, it sets you up for a sure fire way towards an organized life.
Having a planner to turn to each morning and when I get flustered keeps my every day-to-day activities organized and in an easy to follow format.
I simply can’t leave the house without checking on my planner (or bring it with me, obviously).
My planner is a very personal thing, and I can’t wait to share my current planner set up (stay tuned). If you haven’t quite figured out your planning style, head on over to my post about it!
There are a lot of planner styles and options out there, it can be hard to know where to start, which is why I created a post just to help you!
Once you have figured out what kind of planner will suit your lifestyle best and start utilizing it daily, you can see why having a planner is so important!
Reason 2: Make Intentional Choices
I have either filled it in from the days earlier with tasks that need to be completed for the day, or I add new content that I want to get done.
I have noticed when I start each morning off with my planner I am far more intentional with how I fill up my day. When I see my entire day written out, with all potential obligations and mandatory to-dos, I feel empowered. I know what else I can accept into my day and I also know when to say No.
We simply can’t do everything in one day, so being able to say no is extremely important.
Since planning gives you an overview of the “big picture” instead of just what you need to get done today, it can give you insight on how you are spending your time. If you seem to have been spending a majority of your time at work, your planner will reflect that. If you always seem to go over budget, your planner will tell you that too.
Being able to see the entire holistic view of your life, through your planner, can make it easy to know the areas that require more of your attention in the future.
If you didn’t have a planner you wouldn’t:
- be able to look back and see what areas of your life are consuming the other parts
- know how to plan for tomorrow
- have anything to base your future plans off of
Reason 3: All Your Obligations Are In One Place
We all live extremely busy lives. Like extremely busy. Even if all you do is lay on the couch and watch tv, you gotta know when your show is coming on!
When you have a planner you are able to see every single obligation in one uniform place.
You may have a different schedule each day of the week, track meals for your family, or are constantly buzzing around to meetings – either way, when you have a planner, you are able to see everything you need to get done for the day, in one place.
If you are trusting your memory to get you through the upcoming weeks and are successful at it, please teach me your secrets.
I can’t remember my name half of the time, and it was like that before I had a life altering accident!
Since I can’t remember yesterday, let alone what I have to do today, having a planner is a necessity for me.
My current planner has weekly views and a monthly view for each of the upcoming months for the year. That allows me to mark any important events, birthdays, or holidays that I want to remember for the rest of the year.
There is also a section that is dedicated to notes. So whether I’m on the go, in a drive thru, or at Target, there is a place to scribble down my world changing thoughts.
Without having a planner in my life I would never be organized. Never make it to things on time. Never remember when a special day is coming. Nothing.
Because I have a planner I am able to simply turn to today’s date, and I can see everything I need to get done, places I need to be at, and events I want to attend, all in one place.
Yeah, it would be nice to be able to remember things… But I can’t so here we are!
Reason 4: Don’t Miss Due Dates
Kind of going with the above reason… When you have a planner it is literally impossible to miss those important due dates.
Are you a:
- student where your schedule differs on the day
- working executive who is constantly out of meetings
- mom who has soccer, dance, and homeschool to juggle…
You need to have a planner.
Not only does having a planner provide you with a visual reminder of when something is due or needs to be done, but it can also help you keep those things a priority.
Do you know you have a meeting with your boss that you can’t be late for?Put it in your planner.
Three different discussion board assignments due by midnight tomorrow? Your planner will serve as a reminder so you don’t miss a single post.
There is also science that talks about the benefits of keeping a planner and your memory.
When you plan your life on a planner you have something visual to tie your memory to. Using techniques like you would in a daily planner externalizes your memory! When you take the details of your day and put them on paper you are able to clear your mind of reminders and keep only the important information in your mind.
Reason 5: Enjoy Your Free Time
Just like when you use a planner to track all the things you have to do, it also shows you the exact moments when you don’t have to do anything.
Not gonna lie, these are my favorite places in my planner.
I can see spaces in my daily timeline where I have nothing scheduled, making it obvious when I can relax and take a step back from my busy day.
Are you ever relaxing and are then are panic-stricken by the thought that you have something to do? Those times have ruined quite a few beautiful and peaceful naps. Once I started to keep and have a planner, those moments don't happen anymore!
Personally I break my planner down into hourly time slots.
I found that this was a better visual for my day to day planner so I know when exactly I have an obligation. (and when I can take a break) You might think this is a bit obsessive, and you’re probably right. But it’s a method that works with the madness that is my life!
Because I have a planner, I am also getting better at my time management strategies.
Before I would just simply work until I couldn’t work anymore. Now that I have a planner I am able to set realistic goals for the day while also scheduling in some me time. I get you have a lot of other areas of your life that are fighting for your attention, but you have to take time for you!
When you have a planner you can set those specific time slots for nothing but free time!
Reason 6: Manage Stress
If you could do anything to manage just a small percentage of your stress, wouldn’t you do it? This is why you should have a planner!!!
When you have a planner, you are almost forced to have good time management skills. And some basic organization skills come too.
Just implementing a teeeeeny portion of these into your life can lessen this feeling of stress.
Having a planner make it simple to see what you need to get done for your day. But it can also help you visually see how your day is laid out.
When you can see what is upcoming in your day you see the predetermined hours of time those actions will take. Now you have an overview of how your day will go. This can make your days feel more manageable which can reduce stress in your day to day life!
Reason 7: Feel Successful
If for no other reason why you should have a planner except to feel successful, you should still do it.
Do you know how satisfying it is to cross something off of a to do list? Or to put a check next to a lengthy project that you finally finished up? When you keep a planner you are essentially logging your success stories.
Have a big test last week that you studied for? When you finally check it off you are essentially telling your brain that that task is finished. You can then focus on what is next.
It can also serve as inspiration!
When I get overwhelmed I like being able to look back over my planner and see all the things I have already accomplished. Seeing that I have already checked off harder things to do makes it seem more reasonable that I can finish what is in front of me for the day.

The planning world is a phenomenal place. Not only can it be a creative outlet, but they genuinely help you take control of your life. If stress and looming due dates are wreaking havoc in your life, consider getting a planner.
What’s important to remember is this:
Even though you have a planner, you have to use it for it to help you.
If you have a nice car but no driver’s license, what good does that do you? Just like with anything else, you have to put forth effort to make the tools work for you. Same thing with your planner!
